Volunteer with us.

Why volunteer with us?

Our volunteers play a vital part in our work, including providing professional tax advice for the people we support. Volunteering with us is a rewarding way to use your existing expertise (in tax or otherwise) and develop additional knowledge and skills. Volunteering can also build your wellbeing, connection to others, and can give you a sense of purpose.

Together, we will look at the reasons why you would like to volunteer – whether you are looking to take on a new challenge and learn new skills or simply just want to help. We want to make sure you get the most out of volunteering.

Not sure where to start? Take a look at the information on this page and check our frequently asked questions.

“As I have retired, I enjoy the opportunity volunteering gives me to use the skills and experience I have accumulated as well as providing me with an enjoyable and rewarding activity. I find the way in which we help people very rewarding and humbling. The biggest thing for me is helping people in every volunteering session, alleviating their concerns about tax and taking at least this worry away.”

David Richardson, TaxAid Volunteer

Volunteer roles.

There are different ways you can use your skills and experience at TaxAid.

Helpline volunteers.

As a helpline volunteer, you would answer calls and speak with our beneficiaries helping them with simple tax queries. For complex tax issues your role would be to take notes and prepare them for the case worker.

Case worker.

As a case worker, you would take on individual beneficiary cases from start to finish. You might file tax returns or write appeals. All case workers are supported and accredited.

Community volunteers.

Our community volunteers support us in a variety of ways. You could visit events on our behalf, assist with fundraising, write articles for our website, and raise awareness about the charity.

Current roles.

Here are the current roles we’re recruiting volunteers for. Take a look at our FAQs below if you have any questions about applying.

Volunteer Tax Advice Case Workers.

Volunteer Case Workers support people by managing and resolving individual tax cases that require ongoing help beyond an initial helpline call. These are cases where the person is unable to resolve their tax issue independently and needs additional support.

As a Case Worker, you will use your tax knowledge and professional experience to help people navigate complex tax issues, liaise with HMRC, and work towards a fair and sustainable resolution.

Frequently asked questions

Your volunteering time depends on you and the role you take on. Some people volunteer every day, others a few hours a week, and some choose to help at one-off events or activities.

We try to match your availability as best we can, and any time you can give is always appreciated.

We welcome people from all backgrounds who want to use their skills to help others.

For Helpline and Case Worker roles we ask volunteers to have practical, up-to-date knowledge of personal and small business tax, and to be confident in managing their own IT.

We provide training on areas such as tax debt and other issues affecting low-income taxpayers, but we cannot cover core tax knowledge.

We encourage you to read the role description carefully and get in touch if you meet the criteria.

Our volunteers play a vital role in supporting people on low incomes who would otherwise struggle to access tax advice. By volunteering, you help people feel heard, supported, and less overwhelmed by their tax problems.

Your work contributes directly to improved outcomes for our clients and strengthens the charity as a whole.

Will I make a difference?

The answer is yes! In our 2019 Volunteer Survey, 96% of respondents felt their work positively impacts the beneficiary and the charity as a whole, with 55% stating the impact as significant.

All of our roles focus on helping people who genuinely need support, who often feel as though they are stuck because they cannot afford paid tax help.

“Each case that I have had the privilege to work on has had its own memorable aspects and rewards. There isn’t one particular case that particularly sticks out, but the genuine appreciation and thanks shown by clients is heart-warming and reminds me why I get so much pleasure out of working with TaxAid.”

Stephen Pinhey, TaxAid Volunteer.
