Lesley Neumann has worked in tax for nearly 40 years. She is one of our 300 volunteers, using her expertise and experience to support our clients with their tax issues.
Here she tells us about her career, family life and what it’s like volunteering at TaxAid.
“I have spent my whole career working in tax – 39 years! I joined HMRC after graduating in 1984 but decided that HMRC was not for me so moved into the profession, joining KPMG and then Arthur Andersen in 1996. This became Deloitte and here I stayed until I retired, clocking up 27 years, working primarily in employment taxes.
“I’ve spent most of my career working in London and we still live here. Our son graduated last year and has returned to live at home which has its ups and downs! It still seems rather strange to me, but he has joined the graduate programme at HMRC, so we’ll see how that goes.
“I started volunteering in May 2024. I usually work one day per week and I enjoy it hugely. For the most part I review the tax returns that have been prepared very diligently by other volunteers.
“As you might imagine, some are straightforward and others are more complicated than I could have imagined! There’s great support here to get to the right answer.”
