Working as self-employed

Students

If you are a student and you work on a self-employed basis, you are taxed in the same way as other self-employed workers. Key points to consider are:

• Registering with HMRC
• Record keeping
• Exception from class 2 National Insurance
• Saving up for the tax bill
• Tax returns

It is very important that you provide for any tax due on self-employed earnings. HMRC recovery action could interrupt your studies and in extreme cases there could be a risk of bankruptcy – even if you have no assets.
