Help with your Tax Return

A tax return is a form issued by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) which is used to collect information on your income and capital gains for a particular tax year.  HMRC uses the information you provide to check your tax liability for the year.  The form includes sections where you can give information on any reliefs or allowances you are entitled to, which may reduce your final tax bill.

You will not normally receive a Tax Return unless you register as Self-Employed with HMRC, or are a company director. However, HMRC may notify you that they need you to complete one if they have received information to suggest this is necessary (such as if they know you have made significant capital gains during the year.) Also, if you have rental income or some other substantial source of untaxed income that you have informed HMRC about, they will normally send you a Tax Return to complete.
