Extension to tax return filing deadline – midnight 2 February

In the light of intended industrial action by some HMRC staff, tax returns which are filed on-line until midnight on Thursday 2 February will be treated as received by 31 January 2012. This means that a late filing penalty of £100 will not be charged.

In addition, interest will not be charged for late payments of tax which reach HMRC on 1 or 2 February.

By Thursday morning, 26 January, HMRC had received 7,738,466 or 74 per cent of the 10.5 million Self Assessment tax returns issued. So there are still many returns to be submitted before the deadline!
